Most applications consist not only of interactive forms or pages (which require editable objects and collections), but also of non-interactive processes. In a 1- or 2-tier physical model, these processes run on the client workstation or web server, of course. But in a 3-tier model, they should run on the application server to have optimal access to the database server or other back-end resources. Common examples of non-interactive processes include tasks as simple as checking to see if a specific customer or product exists, and as complex as performing all the back-end processing required to ship an order or post an invoice. The CommandBase class provides a clear starting point for implementing these types of behaviors. A command object is created on the client and initialized with the data it needs to do its work on the server. It is then executed on the server through the data portal. Additionally, Oracle would have to effectively serialize inserts and updates to this table at the transaction level. This is because if we add ID=1 to PART_1, Oracle would have to somehow prevent anyone else from adding ID=1 to PART_2. The only way to do this would be to prevent others from modifying index partition PART_2, since there isn t anything to really lock in that partition. In an OLTP system, unique constraints must be system enforced (i.e., enforced by Oracle) to ensure the integrity of data. This implies that the logical model of your application will have an impact on the physical design. Uniqueness constraints will either drive the underlying table partitioning scheme, driving the choice of the partition keys, or point you toward the use of global indexes instead. We ll take a look at global indexes in more depth next.

Summary

You can follow standard design patterns like MVC (Model View Controller) and MVP (Model View Presenter) when it comes to implementing separation of business logic from the main user interface/presentation. The MVVM (Model-View-ViewModel) is a more suitable pattern among Silverlight LoBs. One of the most important aspects of implementing the MVVM pattern in WPF and Silverlight is the ability for the UI layer to bind directly to the commands in the ViewModel. Commanding allows designers/developers to specify, in XAML, events that fire back into the ViewModel. The ViewModel is nothing but a presentation of the view but as a class. The reason to use a ViewModel is the separation of concerns, as we do not have to add logic to the view, i.e., the user interface. Commanding can be used only on controls derived from the ButtonBase class at the moment, and will be executed only by the Click event. The ButtonBase class represents the base class for all button controls, such as Button, RepeatButton, and HyperlinkButton, which we saw in 3. To define the contract for commanding for ButtonBase controls, it uses the same contract ICommand from the System.Windows.Input namespace as used in WPF.
