The first principle is less is not more Don t hold back when it comes to taking product photos Consider the photos of shoes I ve taken, shown in Figure 11-2 I always try to take six, seven, or more photos of each item from different angles All products don t lend themselves to so many views, of course If you re only taking a photo of a single bottle of nail polish, a single image is appropriate But this brings me to the second principle Get up close and personal with your images Use your camera s macro function to take a single close-up image and, if you need to keep the image in focus, use a tripod In Figure 11-3, I got as close as possible to show the detail on a signed record album The third principle is light your items from different angles Don t use a single incandescent bulb Point halogen or other photographic lights at the object from two, three, or more directions to reduce shadows And, be sure you drape a sheet behind the object being photographed that provides contrast and makes your merchandise easy to see A simple white drape is effective for most purposes

Besides a browser, one of the simplest tools to perform Web hacking is the Swiss Army knife of networking, netcat, which we discuss frequently throughout this book In fact, netcat has some clear advantages over a browser: w It allows raw HTTP input some browsers like Internet Explorer prune extraneous input like /// (dot-dot-slash) This can be quite maddening for would-be Web hackers Raw HTTP output is returned to standard out, which allows much more granular analysis of the server response than is possible in a browser, which simply renders the HTML (obfuscating juicy data like comments in the source code, and so on)

Accessible only through the Font dialog box, you can change the spacing between letters (known as kerning when you re adjusting the space between two characters, and as tracking when you re adjusting space throughout a word or sentence) and apply fancy-schmancy text animations Why change character spacing For the sake of legibility sometimes very small text is easier to read if you add a little space between letters and for graphic effect Imagine spreading a title across a page rather than leaving the letters of a word or phrase clustered in the middle of the page You can spread text out over the width of the page or any portion thereof, or if you need to tweak the space between letters so that something will fit just so on a line, you can reduce the spacing between letters as well The Character Spacing tab is shown in Figure 6-3

In 3, we discussed the use of netcat in banner grabbing and this is exactly the same way it s used for general Web hacking To connect to a Web server, use netcat as shown in the following example Once connected, enter the HTTP request in raw format In this example, you use GET / HTTP/10, which requests the default file in the Webroot directory Follow this with two swats of the ENTER key (we have highlighted entry of two carriage returns as [CRLF][CRLF]):

Another thing you can do on the Character Spacing tab has nothing to do with the spacing between letters, but with the spacing between the text and the baseline The baseline is the invisible foundation each line of text sits on; the descenders of letters such as y, g, p, q dip below that line The Position option (also shown in Figure 6-3) in the Character Spacing tab allows you to adjust the distance above or below the baseline that your selected text should be You can choose Raised or Lowered and then set the point distance you want the text moved up or down The Text Effects tab offers six different animations from a flashing background to sparkling confetti and allows you to preview the selected effect before you apply it to your text Of course, the animations show only in documents onscreen, because printing can t capture motion

The raw HTTP response is returned to the console, showing the HTTP headers (including the server type, IIS 5) and any HTML or script output
